Description 

Participants will review the underlying pathophysiology of drug-induced movement disorders commonly associated with antipsychotic and other dopamine-modifying therapies. The primary focus will be on the clinical presentation of common movement disorder subtypes, ensuring learners can accurately distinguish between conditions like acute dystonia, akathisia, drug-induced parkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia. This session provides the essential knowledge base for all clinicians.

Learning Objectives 

At the completion of the activity, participants will: 

  1. Describe the pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying common drug-induced movement disorders associated with dopamine-modifying therapies. 
  2. Differentiate among the clinical characteristics of acute dystonia, akathisia, drug-induced parkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia. 
  3. Apply evidence-based approaches to the assessment and treatment of drug-induced movement disorders using validated rating scales and guideline-supported interventions.

Outline 

  • Pathophysiology and Subtype Differentiation: Review the underlying mechanisms and distinct clinical features of the four common drug-induced movement disorder (DIMD) subtypes: acute dystonia, akathisia, drug-induced parkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia. 
  • Structured Assessment: Learn how to apply evidence-based, validated rating scales and structured assessment tools for the practical detection and monitoring of DIMDs in clinical practice. 
  • Optimizing Patient Management: Strengthen the ability to accurately identify, document, and communicate DIMD findings to optimize patient care, implement guideline-supported interventions, and ensure medication safety.

Faculty: 

Austin Campbell, PharmD, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) and Fellow of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (FAAPP), with more than 15 years of experience teaching psychopharmacology to students, residents, and fellows across multiple disciplines. For over a decade, he served as an inpatient Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Psychiatry at the Missouri Psychiatric Center before transitioning to academia in 2022. Since that time, he has practiced as a psychiatric ambulatory care pharmacist within an internal medicine clinic. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals, has authored multiple book chapters on psychiatric treatment, and is a frequent speaker at national and state conferences. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including Teacher of the Year in 2024 and 2025, Pharmacist of the Year from the Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) in 2025, and election to the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists Board of Directors as Member-at-Large beginning in 2026. Dr. Campbell has no relevant financial relationships to disclose. 

Steven Stoner, PharmD, BCPP, FAAPP, is a Clinical Professor and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, while previously serving as the Department Chair of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at the UMKC School of Pharmacy. Dr. Stoner served as the director of an ASHP accredited psychiatric Pharmacy Practice residency program for 10 years (1998-2008) at the Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. In 2006, he completed the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic (AACP) Leadership Fellows Program. Dr. Stoner is also a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and has served on several committees as well as serving on the AACP Board of Directors (2016-2019), as the Chair of the Council of Sections (2017-2018), and the Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Section (2014-2015). Dr. Stoner was also the 2024 recipient of the Anne Marie Liles Distinguished Service Award from AACP and was recently named a Fellow of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists.
